PKW understands the impact and pressure that childhood cancer families face, whether during the treatment, recovery, recrudescence, or bereavement periods. We are committed to developing parental support, workshops, and activities tailored to the needs of parents at each stage. China support

Empower parent support groups to help families of children with cancer in China

To advance the development and establishment of childhood cancer parent organizations in various Chinese cities, we encourage collaboration between childhood cancer parent organizations and medical professionals, fostering a trustworthy relationship to achieve the goal of self-help.

In 2006, PKW achieved a significant milestone by initiating twinning projects in China. Guangzhou was the first city to participate in this endeavor. In June 2006, the Guangzhou Gold-ribbon Special Children Parents Center (GG), formerly known as The Guangzhou Childhood Cancer Parent Group, was founded. This marked a historic moment as it was the first childhood cancer parent organization established by a civilian body in China.

Our collaboration with GG in this twinning project has been ongoing. We have provided not only financial support but have also worked closely to expand our service network in China. Notable achievements include hosting three China Parents Conferences in 2009, 2011, and 2013 in Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Wuhan, respectively. The most remarkable achievement is GG's official recognition by the Chinese government as a non-profit organization and civil charity group.

International involvement

In 2003, the founders of PKW attended The Annual Conference of the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organizations (ICCCPO) in Ireland. At this meeting, they connected with parents from around the world who had experienced the loss of their beloved children. Some parents came from low-income countries with limited resources, but their passion to share their experiences and improve the global situation for childhood cancer patients was inspiring. In 2004, PKW became a member of ICCCPO, and Mr. Benson Pau was elected as the chairman of ICCCPO, serving from 2008 to 2011.

Benson aspired to raise international awareness of childhood cancer through collaboration. In 2010, ICCCPO achieved a significant milestone when the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) granted it special consultative status as a non-profit organization, allowing participation in discussions and expression of opinions. In 2011, representing ICCCPO, Benson attended the UN General Assembly to discuss issues related to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and prevention and control. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the fight against cancer. In 2012, as the director of ICCCPO, Benson tirelessly visited Hue in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia, London in England, and other places to spread this vital message.

In April 2012, Benson, representing ICCCPO, met with key World Health Organization (WHO) officials, including Dr. Oleg Chestnov, the Assistant Director-General for NCDs and Mental Health, to further discussions on increasing awareness for early diagnosis of childhood cancers and ensuring the availability and accessibility of childhood cancer medicines. During the meeting, a WHO-ICCCPO joint publication related to childhood cancers was presented.
